Mathematics of Control
I recorded a short video about an equation that lets us see if we can control an infection through case isolation on symptoms only:
R = R₀(𝜃 + (1-𝜃)(1-ε)) ,
where R is the secondary infections per primary infection after intervention, R₀ is the secondary infections per primary infection before intervention, 𝜃 is the proportion of transmission that happens before / without symptoms and ε is the proportion of symptomatic infections that we can isolate.
While the values of these numbers are very uncertain, we are generally more optimistic about these for monkeypox than we were for COVID.
